Overcoming Addiction: A Family's Journey to Recovery
Claire Harkin vividly recounts the harrowing period supporting her husband, Michael, through a severe cocaine and alcohol addiction. She emphasised the immense personal toll it took, stating, "I ended up nearly breaking myself to trying to help Michael." This candid reflection sheds light on the often-unseen struggles of family members grappling with a loved one's addiction.
The Road to Recovery
Michael's addiction escalated over years, leading him to a critical juncture five years ago where he believed he would have died without intervention. He openly admitted that initial attempts at seeking help were not genuine, describing how he would "manipulate people around us and they believe we're going to change this time." His turning point came when he truly desired change for himself, leading him to the 12-step recovery programme through Heal The Hurt, a Derry-based charity.
Claire highlighted the necessity of self-preservation, explaining how she had to "become selfish and shut him out, so that he could get help because only he could be the one to seek help." This difficult decision ultimately allowed both individuals to work on themselves, paving the way for their current, stronger relationship.
Community Support and Shared Experiences
The Harkins recently shared their story at a Voices of Recovery event in Londonderry, organised by the Old Library Trust and the Bogside and Brandywell Health Forum (BBHF). These events aim to challenge misconceptions surrounding addiction and provide a platform for real-life experiences.
George Conway, another speaker at the event, shared his powerful story of overcoming alcohol addiction, which had left him homeless and led to a life-threatening hospitalisation. Despite being told he might not walk again, George is now training to become a personal trainer, a testament to the transformative power of recovery. Mo Mahon, a support worker from BBHF, described George's recovery as "a genuine miracle," underscoring the hope and inspiration these shared stories offer to others affected by addiction.
