Russian Strikes Kill Seven in Dnipro, Kharkiv; Ukraine Launches Deep Drone Attacks
Overnight Russian military operations led to the deaths of at least seven individuals across Ukraine, with five confirmed fatalities in Dnipro after an apartment building sustained a direct hit. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated the assault continued "practically all night," as rescue teams continued to search for survivors in Dnipro.
Simultaneously, Ukraine launched its own long-distance drone attacks, targeting Russian territory. In Yekaterinburg, nearly 1,600km from the Ukrainian border, six people were injured when a building was struck. Drones targeting an industrial facility near Chelyabinsk were reportedly intercepted.
Russian missiles and drones also targeted Chernihiv, causing two deaths, and impacted Odesa and Kharkiv. Ukrainian authorities claimed to have repelled the majority of over 600 Russian drones, which appears to mark a significant escalation in recent days.
Zelensky outlined the consistent Russian tactics, stating, "The Russians' tactics have not changed: strike drones, cruise missiles, and a significant amount of ballistics. Most of the targets are ordinary infrastructure in cities. Residential buildings, energy, and enterprises have been damaged."
Russia's Ministry of Defence asserted it had intercepted 127 drones across more than a dozen regions and claimed control of Bochkove, a village in the Kharkiv region, according to state media. This claim, if accurate, would represent a minor advance in a region where Western-backed Ukrainian forces have largely held the line against Russian incursions.
Separately, the Romanian Defence Ministry initiated an investigation into "the fall of an object" on its territory near the Ukrainian border during the Russian assault. The ministry clarified that British jets, deployed from Romania, did not engage Russian drones as they did not breach Romanian airspace, refuting earlier suggestions of direct intervention.
With diplomatic efforts stalled, Ukraine continues to seek international support for its military endeavours. On Friday, President Zelensky met with Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman to discuss enhanced air defence cooperation and joint military production, underscoring Ukraine's efforts to cultivate ties with Gulf monarchies. The region, a critical bulwark of Western petrodollar hegemony and military projection, has shown increasing interest in Ukraine's drone warfare capabilities following recent regional hostilities.
