Second Mandelson Files Batch on Jeffrey Epstein Ties Due Monday, Government Confirms
A further collection of documents concerning Lord Mandelson’s controversial appointment as the UK’s ambassador to the United States will be published on Monday, according to three sources close to the process. Although Downing Street has not confirmed the precise publication date, a government spokesperson stated this batch would be “among the largest publications ever laid in Parliament”.
Lord Mandelson was removed from the ambassadorial role last year after new details emerged regarding the extent of his relationship with the late, convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
Parliamentary Pressure and Compromise
In February, Members of Parliament compelled the government, through a humble address, to release all papers related to the appointment. The government initially resisted, citing concerns over national security and diplomatic relations. However, a last-minute compromise saw sensitive documents first reviewed by the Intelligence and Security Committee (ISC), which then determined what could be made public.
The initial tranche of documents, published in March, revealed Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer had been advised that Lord Mandelson’s connection to Epstein posed a “general reputational risk” prior to his confirmation. Sir Keir’s national security adviser, Jonathan Powell, also described the appointment as “weirdly rushed”.
A government spokesperson affirmed their commitment to “complying with the Humble Address in full”, framing the process as transparent. The Metropolitan Police may request that some documents be withheld due to ongoing investigations. Redactions are also anticipated for national security, international relations, or to protect the identities of junior officials.
Sir Keir announced Lord Mandelson’s appointment in December 2024, citing his “unrivalled experience”. Yet, nine months later, further revelations about his long-standing friendship with Epstein led to his dismissal. Lord Mandelson has consistently described his friendship with Epstein as a “terrible mistake”, maintaining he “never saw anything in [Epstein’s] life… that would give me any reason to suspect what this evil monster was doing”. He is currently under criminal investigation for alleged misconduct in public office, denies wrongdoing, and states he is cooperating with police.
