Sheffield Teenagers Convicted of Killing Steven Hague During Robbery

Three teenagers, Jesse Reaney, 18, Layton Lightfoot, 18, and Charlie Wilcock, 17, have been convicted of murder and robbery following the death of Steven Hague in Sheffield. Mr Hague, aged 32, was attacked and robbed on a footpath near Herries Road and Penrith Road on 26 September 2023. He died in hospital two days later from his injuries.

Sheffield Crown Court heard that the group targeted Mr Hague, with prosecutors arguing their actions were intended to 'assert their authority' over him. Following the assault, Mr Hague's wallet, phone, and watch were stolen. The court was told that Lightfoot had sent a message prior to the incident, stating, 'I will take his stuff and leave him with nothing.' Another message from Reaney indicated a desire to 'rob the next person I see'.

Detective Chief Inspector Andrea Campbell, who led the investigation, stated that the teenagers had shown 'no remorse' for their actions. The convictions underscore the severe consequences of such gratuitous violence, particularly when motivated by the exploitation of vulnerable individuals. The three will be sentenced at a later date, with Wilcock receiving a name change restriction due to his age.
