Teenager Drowns in Yorkshire Dales River, Prompting Renewed Warnings After 15 UK Water Deaths
A 13-year-old girl has tragically died after going missing in the River Wharfe, near Burnsall, within the Yorkshire Dales beauty spot. Emergency services were alerted at 18:30 BST on Sunday, but despite rapid rescue from the water and subsequent efforts by members of the public and an air ambulance crew, the teenager succumbed.
This incident follows at least 15 water-related deaths during the recent heatwave across the UK. On Saturday, a 15-year-old girl from Cheshire died in hospital after experiencing difficulties in the sea off Merseyside earlier in the week. Separately, a woman in her 60s died, and a man, also in his 60s, remains in a critical condition after attempting to rescue their dog in Thornton Cleveleys.
Further incidents include the death of a 19-year-old man rescued from a Nottinghamshire lake, and the discovery of a body during the search for a man who disappeared in the Norfolk Broads.
In South Yorkshire, search operations continue for a boy believed to have entered the River Don in Mexborough on Saturday evening and not reappeared. Emergency services, including an underwater search team and mountain rescue, are active in the area. Authorities have urged the public to avoid the search zone.
