Dr Krishna Singh Victim Urges Others to Report Abuse After GP Jailed for 47 Patient Assaults
A woman, identified only as Emma to protect her identity, who was sexually assaulted by her General Practitioner, Dr Krishna Singh, when six months pregnant, has called for other potential victims to come forward. Singh received a 12-year prison sentence in 2022 after convictions for sexual offences against 47 patients spanning four decades, including a rape victim, teenagers, and pregnant women.
Police described the complaints against Singh, whose practice was located at Coatbridge health centre, as “the tip of the iceberg” following his conviction. The judge in his trial characterised Singh, a former police casualty surgeon and MBE recipient, as a sexual predator “hiding in plain sight,” detailing his “calculated and manipulative” serial offending between February 1983 and May 2018.
Emma’s assault occurred almost 40 years ago when Singh, now 76, visited her home after she reported concerns about a potential miscarriage. She recalled that his examination “didn’t feel right” but did not report him to the police at the time, only confiding in her husband. Decades later, in 2018, Emma saw Singh’s name in the news concerning similar allegations and subsequently reported her experience to the police, discovering many other victims.
Singh was found guilty of 54 sexual offences against women and girls over a 35-year period in May 2022. His crimes included kissing, groping, inappropriate examinations, and making sexually suggestive comments to patients. Emma expressed a lack of closure following the verdict, stating, “There’s no closure for me. I’ve not even had an apology from anybody.” She hopes other women will gain the confidence to report their experiences, believing it could lead to further justice.
Civil Action Against Health Board
Thompsons Solicitors is pursuing civil legal action against NHS Lanarkshire on behalf of 31 former patients harmed by Singh while he worked for the health board. Laura Connor, a partner at the firm, stated that Singh is “probably one of the most prolific sex offenders that we deal with in terms of civil claims.” The firm is seeking damages for physical and psychological injury, as well as loss of wages.
Dr Lucy Munro, medical director for health and social care at North Lanarkshire, declined to comment on ongoing legal action but condemned Singh’s actions as a “despicable breach of trust and a total abuse of the patient-doctor relationship,” adding that the health board takes such allegations extremely seriously.
