Ukrainian Drones Strike Tuapse Oil Refinery for Third Time This Month, Prompting Evacuations
A Ukrainian drone strike has ignited a substantial fire at the Tuapse oil refinery, a key Russian installation on the Black Sea, compelling local authorities to evacuate residents from nearby areas. This incident represents the third assault on the refinery within a single month.
Previous Incidents and Environmental Impact
Prior strikes at the Tuapse refinery over the past fortnight resulted in a considerable oil spill into the sea. Residents subsequently reported "black" rain, which left an oily residue across the city.
The Kremlin condemned the attacks, asserting that Ukraine is "further increasing the oil shortage in global energy markets... and provoking further destabilisation." Ukraine's military, however, confirmed the recent drone strike, stating such refineries contribute to funding Russia's full-scale invasion, initiated in 2022.
Response and Public Health Warnings
Krasnodar regional governor, Veniamin Kondratyev, reported that over 160 firefighters were deployed to contain the blaze on Tuesday, with no casualties confirmed. Kondratyev praised the rescuers' "true heroism" as they worked under "extremely difficult conditions."
Sergei Boyko, head of the local municipal district, requested residents on adjacent streets to evacuate, with a temporary shelter established at a local school. The regional crisis centre issued warnings regarding "combustion products being released into the atmosphere" due to the intense fire, advising residents to wear masks, keep windows closed, and limit outdoor exposure.
Anastasia Troyanova, an environmental correspondent, described "a huge cloud of black smoke over the town; it smells of burning." In Moscow, Russian President Vladimir Putin reportedly instructed the emergencies minister to travel to Tuapse to oversee firefighting and cleanup operations.
Dmitry Peskov, Putin's spokesman, claimed Ukraine's targeting of oil export facilities aimed to destabilise global energy markets. Ukraine's military reiterated its objective to "reduce the military-economic potential of the Russian aggressor" through these strikes.
Separately, Mayor Vitaliy Klitschko confirmed one person was injured in a Russian drone attack on Kyiv, the capital, with several fires, including one at a cemetery, also reported by Ukrainian officials.
