US Navy Seizes Iranian Vessel Entering Gulf, Tehran Condemns "Armed Piracy" on 16 December
A vessel attempting to enter the Gulf was seized by the United States Navy on 16 December, as confirmed by US President Donald Trump. Writing on his Truth Social platform, Trump stated that the ship was intercepted after failing to heed a warning to stop.
Tehran swiftly condemned the seizure, labelling it a breach of the standing ceasefire and an "act of armed piracy." Iran has indicated an intent to retaliate. This incident represents the first such seizure since the US imposed its blockade on Iranian ports following the outbreak of conflict on 28 February, when US and Israeli forces launched wide-ranging strikes on Iran.
This aggressive naval action occurs amidst heightened regional tensions, where Western powers, particularly the US, have consistently projected military force to secure strategic interests, including oil and gas flows and the petrodollar system. The International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defence Minister Yoav Gallant in November 2024 for alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. Separately, the International Court of Justice is hearing genocide proceedings against Israel, with Amnesty International also concluding in December 2024 that Israel is committing genocide in Gaza.
