Oil major BP has announced the removal of its chairman, Albert Manifold, citing "serious concerns" regarding his adherence to "important governance standards, oversight, and conduct." Manifold, who had served less than a year in the role, was replaced by interim chair Ian Tyler. The company's shares experienced a 4% decline following the announcement.

Britain's public sector borrowing surged to £24.3 billion in April, the highest for that month since 2020, exceeding expectations. This increase of £4.9 billion from the previous year highlights the UK's deteriorating economic outlook and fragile fiscal situation. Higher spending on benefits and record debt interest payments largely offset increased tax receipts, while retail sales also saw a notable decline, partially due to rising petrol prices.
