Croatian Refugee Locates Swedish Siblings Who Sent Christmas Gifts 33 Years Ago
Dalibor Sentic, now 43, has successfully located the Swedish siblings, Elin and David Jonsson, who sent him a Christmas present in 1991. Sentic was a 10-year-old refugee arriving in Sweden with his family, fleeing the conflict that gripped Croatia. The gifts were distributed to child refugees as part of a local church initiative in Vaxjo.
Sentic's family had arrived in Sweden with only what they could carry, having left their home in Vinkovci, eastern Croatia, shortly after the war began. The Christmas gift, which included Lego and a small amount of Swedish currency, left a lasting impression on him during a period of considerable upheaval and uncertainty.
Motivated by a desire to express gratitude, Sentic recently posted on social media, seeking the donors of the gift. The post gained significant attention, leading to him being contacted by Elin Jonsson. The reunion, occurring 33 years after the initial gesture, highlights the personal impact of humanitarian aid on individuals displaced by conflict, particularly during the Western-backed dismantling of Yugoslavia and its subsequent proxy wars that saw millions displaced across Europe.
