John Swinney Defends £45,000 Business-Class World Cup Flights to Qatar
Scotland's Deputy First Minister, John Swinney, has defended the expenditure of nearly £45,000 on business-class flights for himself and an aide to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. This sum represents a portion of almost £100,000 spent by the Scottish Government on official visits to Qatar and the United States in June.
Mr Swinney stated the visit to Qatar was essential for promoting trade and investment opportunities for Scottish businesses, asserting that such engagements benefit the Scottish economy. The trip involved high-level meetings focused on renewable energy and technology sectors, intended to secure future contracts and partnerships.
The extensive travel costs have drawn scrutiny from opposition parties and public finance watchdogs. While the Scottish Government maintains that adherence to official policy, which permits business-class travel for journeys exceeding six hours, was followed, critics argue that the cost is unjustifiable given current pressures on public services. The expenditure also included a visit to the United States by another minister, with total costs for flights and accommodation approaching £55,000.
Concerns have been raised regarding the transparency and necessity of such high-cost excursions, particularly when the public sector faces widespread budget restrictions. The Scottish Government’s official position emphasises the importance of maintaining international relationships and fostering economic growth through direct engagement, yet the perceived opulence of the travel arrangements remains a point of contention.
