Lady Pamela Hicks, Queen Elizabeth II's Cousin and Lady-in-Waiting, Dies Aged 97
Lady Pamela Hicks, a prominent figure within British royal circles and former lady-in-waiting to Queen Elizabeth II, has died at the age of 97. Her daughter, India Hicks, announced the passing on Instagram, describing her mother as a "cherished institution, but truly the last of her kind."
King Charles III's spokesperson stated he was "greatly saddened" by the news, noting his "deepest gratitude for her long life and loyal service to Queen Elizabeth."
Lady Pamela, daughter of Louis Mountbatten, was present with Princess Elizabeth in Kenya in 1952 when news of King George VI's death arrived, marking Elizabeth's ascension to the throne. Recalling the moment on her daughter's podcast in 2019, Lady Pamela recounted her shift from offering a hug to immediately performing a deep curtsy upon realising Elizabeth's new status.
She was a bridesmaid at Queen Elizabeth II's wedding, describing the experience to the Telegraph in 2017 as a "tremendous rush" due to her swift return from India for the ceremony. Lady Pamela attended Queen Elizabeth II's funeral in 2022 but did not attend King Charles III's coronation, a decision her daughter stated her mother was "not offended at all" by.
