Macclesfield FC Co-Owner Robert Smethurst Suspended Following Coercive Control Arrest
Macclesfield FC has announced the temporary suspension of co-owner Robert Smethurst following his arrest on 19 May. Mr Smethurst was taken into custody in Wilmslow, Cheshire, on suspicion of controlling and coercive behaviour.
The National League North club confirmed it was "aware of reports circulating" and stated that the 48-year-old had been "temporarily relieved of all duties associated with the club while legal guidance is sought."
Mr Smethurst acknowledged his arrest, dismissing the allegations as "an absolute load of rubbish." He expressed profound disappointment, stating, "I'm absolutely gutted, devastated. I want my club back." He further appealed for support, adding, "I hope the whole of Macclesfield gets behind me and we pull together and put me back into a position where I feel that I actually belong."
Cheshire Constabulary confirmed the arrest, noting, "On Tuesday 19 May a 48-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of controlling and coercive behaviour in Wilmslow. He has since been bailed pending further enquiries."
Mr Smethurst acquired the club in 2020 following its insolvency. The club's board of directors issued a statement requesting restraint from speculation, assuring stakeholders that they are "wholeheartedly acting within the best interests of the club and in a bid to safeguard its continued success."
