Southampton: 16-Year-Old Girl Among Seven Arrested After Henry Nowak Murder Protests
Seven additional arrests have been made, and three more men have been charged, following violent disorder in Southampton after the murder of Henry Nowak. Eleven police officers and a police dog sustained injuries during Tuesday's unrest, which saw missiles, including wheelie bins and chairs, thrown at law enforcement.
The protests erupted in the wake of the release of police body camera footage depicting 18-year-old Nowak being handcuffed. This footage surfaced after Vickrum Digwa, 23, was sentenced to life imprisonment on Monday for Nowak's fatal stabbing.
Hampshire Constabulary confirmed that Darren Medhurst, 36, and Jordan Hambleton, 19, both from Southampton, alongside Callum Darch, 27, from Romsey, have been charged with violent disorder. These three remain in custody and are scheduled to appear at Southampton Magistrates' Court on Monday.
Four other men, aged 18, 34, and 45 from Southampton, and a 41-year-old from Basingstoke, have also been arrested on suspicion of violent disorder and are currently in police custody. A 16-year-old girl from Southampton, similarly arrested on suspicion of violent disorder, has been released on conditional police bail as inquiries continue.
Previously, eight men have entered guilty pleas to violent disorder charges. One of these individuals also admitted to possessing an offensive weapon. Another man has denied assaulting a police officer.
Nowak, a first-year accountancy and finance student at the University of Southampton, was fatally stabbed in December by Digwa, who had falsely claimed racial abuse and self-defence.
