Southampton Protests Lead to Charges for Two Men After Police Clashes
Two individuals have been charged subsequent to protests that devolved into clashes with police in Southampton. The disorder unfolded on Tuesday evening in the Portswood area, near the home of Vickrum Digwa, who was recently jailed for the fatal stabbing of 18-year-old Henry Nowak.
Police Injured During Disorder
During the unrest, officers faced a barrage of missiles, resulting in injuries to 11 police personnel and one police dog. Matt Styler, 50, of no fixed abode, Gosport, has been charged with assault by beating of an emergency worker. Daniel Frost, 44, of Northam Road, Southampton, faces charges of violent disorder and possession of an offensive weapon.
Both men are scheduled to appear at Southampton Magistrates' Court imminently, as confirmed by Hampshire police.
Independent Inquiry into Police Actions
The clashes follow the sentencing of Digwa, 23, who received a life sentence with a minimum term of 21 years on Monday. The events have intensified scrutiny over the initial police response to Nowak's stabbing. Body camera footage revealed Nowak, in handcuffs, repeatedly informing officers he had been stabbed, while Digwa, who had used a large blade he cited as religious, falsely claimed to be the victim of a racist attack. This led to officers arresting Nowak instead of his assailant.
The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has since initiated an investigation into the force's handling of the incident.
