Princess of Wales Witnesses Cancer Patient Ringing End-of-Treatment Bell at The Christie Hospital
The Princess of Wales joined Claire Lorente, 30, at The Christie hospital in Manchester as Ms. Lorente marked the conclusion of her chemotherapy course by ringing the 'end of treatment bell'. The Princess, who disclosed her own cancer remission earlier last year, congratulated Ms. Lorente and her family, acknowledging the demanding journey.
Her visit to the specialist cancer unit focused on the extensive range of holistic care available. The Christie, a prominent European cancer centre, serves over 60,000 patients annually from Greater Manchester and surrounding areas, offering services such as art classes, a well-being garden, and chaplaincy, all provided without charge to patients and carers.
During an art session with patients, the Princess discussed the multifaceted impact of a cancer diagnosis, stating it 'changes you in so many ways physically but also emotionally and psychologically'. She emphasised the importance of finding avenues for expression within a clinical setting. One patient described the art sessions as a 'lifeline', fostering a sense of community amidst their treatment.
The Princess also toured the well-being garden and the Teenage and Young Adult (TYA) unit, which provides social and recreational facilities for younger patients. Roger Spencer, Chief Executive of The Christie NHS Foundation Trust, expressed that it was 'an honour' to showcase their patient-centred approach, which extends beyond medical diagnosis to encompass individual well-being.
Following her visit, the Princess conveyed on social media that meeting patients, families, and staff served as 'a powerful reminder that healing is about so much more than treatment alone', highlighting the hospital's holistic care in empowering patients through their recovery.
