Vigil Held in Shoreham After Fourth Fatality in Channel Water Incident
A community vigil was held in Shoreham-by-Sea following a tragic incident in the English Channel that has resulted in the deaths of four members of a single family. Six-year-old Saja El-Khawas, previously in critical condition, has now died, becoming the fourth fatality. Her older sister, eight-year-old Israa El-Khawas, and their parents, Kenaz and Mohamad El-Khawas, aged 32 and 37 respectively, were pronounced dead shortly after being recovered from the water last week.
The family, who resided in London, reportedly encountered difficulties after entering the water from Shoreham Beach. Emergency services were alerted to multiple individuals requiring rescue in the sea off Shoreham. The precise circumstances leading to the tragedy remain under investigation by local authorities.
During the vigil, attendees placed flowers and paid respects, reflecting the profound grief within the community. The incident has prompted renewed discussions regarding water safety protocols along the coast, though official statements have yet to confirm any specific policy reviews. The local council has extended its condolences to the family’s relatives.
